Street Style // Michael

The Bean Scene seems to be the place to find well dressed coffee connoisseurs. Today I ran into Michael, who was sporting tan cords and a chambray shirt. I was particularly impressed by his watch, and the leather strap that matches not only his pants, but his iced americano. Combined with the sweet glasses, this guy is probably a real lady killer.

Stylish Summer Sunglasses

 

 

When choosing sunglasses, it's important to buy a pair that will go with everything . Be sure to look at the colours in your closet and decide which ones will complement your wardrobe and your skin tone. To stand out with a unique, yet versatile pair, I suggest these sand coloured frames from Jack Spade.

Face shape is also important to consider. Round face shapes should look for glasses with square frames, to bring out definition in your jaw and cheekbones. Look for heavy, masculine modern frames for a powerful look.

A big trend right now is round framed glasses. These work best on long, oval faces, but don't be afraid to experiment - round frames will be the biggest trend this summer.

The classic aviator looks great on every face shape. I prefer gold frames for warm skin tones, but you can exercise your own discretion. Metal frames look more expensive than plastic ones and are great to wear with more formal outfits.

I ran into this sharp dressed man at Bean Scene for lunch this afternoon. Danny McBride is a true shark: handsome, polite and very friendly when I asked for a picture. He is, in one word, polished. His blazer and jeans looked crisp and fit well and his round tortoise glasses added individuality to his look. Danny says he does his shopping at Man + Women. I've been there and can confirm this is the best place for trendy men's clothing.

The Sad Plaid Story: How to Cope With Plaid Shirt Seperation

How many times have you shown up at a party, or at a bar to meet your friends, and found that more than half of you are wearing a button up, plaid shirt? Sometimes, your best friend will wear his blue plaid shirt on the same day you do - but that's okay, because it's a different blue plaid, right? Wrong. Plaid shirts are great, comfortable, and have been in fashion almost consistently since the 90's. That means that every guy and his dad owns multiple plaid shirts. There is nothing specifically wrong with wearing plaid, but it does lump you into the broad category of the everyman. If you're trying to set yourself apart from the crowd and catch the wandering eye of a new woman, wearing plaid is like black and white stripes in a herd of zebras - she can't tell were you end and where the next plaid-clad gentleman begins. 

Generally speaking, I'm not an enemy of plaid. Subtlety plaid suits, and vibrant plaid ties, can look stylish and modern. Plaid socks, bow ties, and shorts are fun and quirky (when worn separately  of course). Even, I'll admit, plaid button up shirts are not all that bad, because they have a trim fit, are made of soft material and can be worn casually. However, they are not special or unique. A true shark would never wear a plaid shirt in public. To help you break out of your plaid shell and into a fresh spring style, here are some handy plaid shirt alternatives. 






Gingham feels like cheating on a no-plaid diet, but it's on the list. Gingham is baby steps away from plaid because it only consists of two colors, woven together in alternating squares. This year, white + [any color] gingham has been extremely popular. Black, purple, red, green and pink gingham have been showing up in stores and on well dressed men. Look for a classic cotton gingham shirt that is more fitted that your typical plaid shirt, and can be tucked in.

 Club Monaco offers a variety of quality shirts for men that can be worn casually or to dress up. The mustard yellow shirt has a small paisley handkerchief print, dubbed the Paisley Max Shirt. Also available in blue, this unique print will grab far more attention that plaid ever did. Wear it untucked with a denim jacket and a cool pair of sunglasses.

The mint green Linen Shirt will provide maximum comfort and breatheability in the summer. Though linen isn't a print like plaid, the loose weave give a certain texture to the garment. Wear it tucked in, with the sleeves rolled up. Don't worry about wrinkles in your shirt - that is one of the qualities of linen. 

The dark blue Owen Shirt features a small white diamond print, and is another great shirt to wear casual and untucked, just like your old plaid shirt. Polka dots are finally in again for men, but some are still hesitant about the trend. This small, geometric dot will allow you to rock the dots whilst keeping your masculinity intact. The David Bowie Influence

David Bowie pioneered the marriage between fashion and music. Throughout his 50-odd year career, he has captivated the fashion world's imagination with vibrant colour, trend setting silhouettes and larger-than-life characters. Every few years, Bowie re-invents himself with a new look, accompanied by a new persona. The Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Major Tom all helped shape the face of men's style through the ultimate vessel: David Bowie himself. As a tribute to a recently re-invented Bowie, we're taking  a fond look back on some his most inspirational looks and suggest ways to incorporate a little Bowie in your everyday life. 

This iconic outfit has been copied my many trendsetters over the years, but Bowie himself was inspired by the influential actress, Marlene Dietrich. This wide-legged pant have come back in a big way this season. Both Lanvin and Ance feature wide-legged, pleated slacks in their Spring 2013 lines. After so many years of tight jeans, it's time to slip into a classier look - the wide legged pant.

 This 1972 picture of Bowie features jacket with a high-contrast floral filigree pattern. With summer coming up, it's the perfect time to find a lightweight jacket with an some eye-catching patterns. Lace-up wrestler's boots were a big trend in Europe some five years ago and may be ready for re-visiting, but avoid looking like you are wearing a costume. The David Bowie look is all about confidence and carelessness - by adopting too many elements at once you can look lost between characters. 

This 1972 photo was taken during an Interview with David Bowie. Men's scarves have been seen from some designers such as Louis Vuitton and Robert Graham. The more colorful they are, the better, but look for smaller, geometric, non-floral prints. To pull of this look wear your scarf untied around your neck, over top of a suit, but no tie. This a great way to bring a sense of luxurious style to your everyday look.  

David Bowie dressed like a gentlemen in the streets of Munich, circa 1976. The texture of his wool suit looks deep and rich, even through this black-and-white photo. Also notice how thick his tie is. Even with this wide tie and bulky fabric, expert tailoring makes this suit look trim and stylish. Consider shopping around for a thick wool suit to wear in the fall and modernize with a knit tie or chambray shirt. 

This mustard yellow suit is one of the most recognizable of Bowie's looks. The colour is generally only suitable for the eighties, but many companies are offering coloured suits this season. Head down to H&M for their selection of suits and blazers in every colour. 

At 60 years old, David Bowie just released a new album. Not only that, but it's good, too. He has proven himself as an incredible musician, and that he's not ready to get off the stage yet. Bow Tie Me Up

Bow ties have caused a bit of controversy over that last few months: Are they cool, or nerdy? What are they worn with? Can they be clip-on,  pre-tied, or should they be tied by hand? How do you tie one anyways? And aren't they for hipsters?

Today we are going to put your bow tie worries at ease. When worn correctly, they can look sharp and draw attention. Some people swear by the bow tie, such as Jonathan Snyder from Southern League Magazine. Bow ties are a great way to show off your individuality and set you apart from the crowd, which could be just what you need to capture the attention of a special lady.  Here are some great ways to incorporate a bow tie into you're everyday look.

For a formal event, always wear a black bow tie for a sleek, sharp look. A pre-tied bow tie is perfectly acceptable. These will have sharper corners and will set you apart from the black-tie crowd. This has been a big trend with celebrities at awards shows this season. They know how to pull off  bow tie without looking nerdy or stuffy. For a more casual look, play with texture and pattern with your bow tie. Knits are in right now, and so are quirky fabrics printed in plaid, polka dots, flamingos, martini glasses, or just about anything else you could think of. Ditch the suit jacket and wear with a tucked-in, button down shirt. A bow tie can look great on a denim shirt, or paired with a white shirt and suspenders. These can be clip-on, pre-tied or hand-tied. Trust me, no one is judging you on your ability to tie a bow.

Most importantly, a bow tie should fit your personality. Funny, easy going men look great in a bow tie. If your style tends to be more serious and professional  you may want to skip out on this trend. Moreover, never wear a bow tie with a t-shirt. Just don't do it. Punk Rockabilly

What do women want? A bad boy with a modern edge, or a loving man with classic style? Get the best of both worlds with vintage influence from the 1950's era. Channel your inner James Dean with a pompadour, tattoos and a bad attitude.  The hottest hairstyle right now is short on the sides and long on top, according to the 2013 GQ men's hairstyle guide. This is perfectly compatible with the 1950's slicked back hairstyle, but try to go easy on the hair gel. Women will be fighting to run their fingers through your hair, so don't turn them off with stiff, greasy hair.

Get your hands on some basics first: a fitted white t-shirt, a slim-fit light jean, and a leather jacket. Go vintage with button-up cardigans and wayfarer glasses, or find your edge with a leather jacket and a new tattoo.  Shoes are the key for pulling of this look: avoid sneakers, sandals, and loafers. Opt for an oxford shoe or any lace-up dress shoe.

Louis Vuitton Luxury

The Louis Vuitton spring collection is a great place to draw inspiration. If your style is clean cut and classic, or cool and trendy, the Spring 2013 represents a man who knows how to bask in luxury. Their nautical themes this season includes leather jewellery, anchor themes, and blue and grey tones. Trade your tie in for an ascot, and unbutton the top button for a relaxed, beachy look. Neon tones have also taken center stage in this collection, but should be deferred for a more classic look. Try pairing a navy blazer with a slim fitted white jean and boat shoes. The cool sophistication will be a modern take on the classic yacht captain. 

Designed by Kim Jones, this collection reflects on his travels to Thailand and are meant to "remind the adventurer of sandy beaches he'd known and loved," according to this Esquire article. Read the article for more information on the design and construction of this high-end line.

The Effect of A Good Suit

Never underestimate the power of a properly fitted suit. In the business world, it is always important to make a god impression, and this is doubly true when it comes to women. If you want to be perceived as an Alpha - male, there is no better way to do this by wearing a tailored suit. All of your friends will look like young boys when compared to the intimidating stature of you in a suit. If you don't believe me, Sir Micheal Caine will demonstrate:

When buying a suit, regardless on price, one thing is very important: Get it tailored! If you suit cost $400 or $4000, it will not look good if it doesn't fit you right. Some stores will do tailoring for free on merchandise you buy in the store. Even if you do have to pay, it's a good investment. You want to look like a man, not like you are playing dress up in your fathers clothes. Secondly, make sure what you are wearing is a modern style. Avoid large plaid prints and wide lapels, and get a nice trim fit across the shoulders. If you can, shop for a suit with a female friend: she will make sure you are heading in the right direction. Otherwise, this GQ article is a great guide for finding the right suit. Finally, a man in a suit is like a woman in heels: you need to learn how to walk in it. Remember to hold your shoulders back and walk with confidence. Having your head down and shoulders hunched will ruin the effect of the suit.

A Bearded Shark Is Still A Shark

Beards are back. On my last post, I mentioned the bearded model in the Eton campaign  and lately , everywhere I look I see men with great, big, bushy beards. The question lingers on, as it has for centuries, "Do women like facial hair?" At last, we've learned the answer is yes, and no. Some women like it, and    some really don't, but when the answer is yes, it's an exuberant YES! Beards remind women of carnal instinct, testosterone and rough kisses. A beard is also a great tool for hiding a weak chin or jaw line. Some men just suit beards, while other don't. If you have a patchy beard, it is best to shave it clean off, but if you can grow it long, wear it proudly. Remember to keep your beard well groomed, trim down those fly-aways and please, clean up the neck beard area. The ladies will be falling over each other to try to get their hands in your beard. Both men and women perceive a man with a beard to have a higher social status, and many celebrities are growing out their stubble. Eton of Sweden

 The collared shirt been both 

established and revolutionized by the world-famous shirt producers, Eton of Sweden. The bring class, style, and the top quality in fabrics and construction. After nearly a century of hard work, Eton represents the leading brand in men's shirts. This is due partially to their extraordinary materials: the entire collection is made from Pima or Egyptian cotton. The Luxist had an interview with Erik Wilkinson, Eton's Director of Sales for North America. He claims their success is due to a "completely vertically integrated process", from the sourcing of materials, to the fabric finishing to the construction of garments. Check out the male model Eton has been used in their last few ad campaigns. This rustic man sports a scar over his left eyebrow and a rather impressive beard. Ladies every wear are swooning over the bushy beard which had become a trend in recent years.

The Great White Gatsby

No woman can resist the sharply dressed Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby, due in theatres on May 10th. Academy Award winning designer Catherine Martin transforms Jazz Era fashions to look modern and sophisticated. Only she could turn a period movie into the next big trend in men's fashion. 

Catherine teamed up with the Brooks Brothers to release a certainly dapper menswear line based off the movie. Channel your inner Gatsby with a three piece suit and a pair of two-toned oxfords. Smart blazers are paired with plaid vests or colourful bow ties for a unique spin on 1920's style. Black tie style is transformed with lapel waist coats, and bow-ties. The look is clean, composed, and very, very rich.

Expect a vintage feel to formal trends this season, and try to incorporate them into you're everyday look. A pocket watch, straw hat or bow tie can give some extra class to an outfit.
